What really pissed me off is that the senate parliamentarian is the one who axed the 15 dollar minimum wage that would have gone a long, long way to helping out a lot of lower income people.

The parliamentarian is not an elected position.

You know what Mitch McConnell did when the senate parliamentarian tried to axe something from his bill?

He fired the parliamentarian. Then he passed the bill.

The fact that Schumer didn't do the same thing just goes to show that the entire idea of the 15 dollar minimum wage was all just lip service to get elected. Not getting that done is going to cost a lot of Dems the next election. Mark my words.

It's going to cost them big.

Bernie, was screaming about. Warren was screaming about it. Of course, that deal that Bernie was going to try and do to force some kind of tax angle would have never worked. That was lame. They should have just as well to have dropped that.

That parliamentarian was total BS. I would have blow passed her in a min! She's nothing. Republicans don't yield to that.

What's incredibly stupid is, "I think they knew about this already! Both Schumer and Biden both. Yes. Schumer knew better, and even Biden did too. Biden is an ex Senator from all those years. He did know better. Let's don't fool ourselves. I'm sure Biden and Schumer had a conversation together on this. This is more fallout ultimately on the senate election 2020. Joe Manchin and Kristen Sienema are bitting the DNC in the A@@ right now. It has brought it to this.

What's even more pressing that's coming is that filibuster problem that is looming. That's even more pressing on top of all of this. You better believe Biden and the Democrats had better get some BALLS. I've read some serious articles in the last weeks about them telling Biden that he had better "channel his inner LBJ in a heartbeat", or else Trump 2.0 will on his way in 2024. It was a huge article, well written too I read on-line. (it was either a NYT, or Washington Post article I read) Biden has better read over LBJ quickly.

This article is about 20 days old ^

https://www.politico.com/news/2021/03/14/democrats-relief-benefits-joe-biden-475701

this is hours old ^

There are more articles popping up pressing him to be more LBJ or FDR...

And they have a point.....

He does need to be. I agree with them. I want him to be. The more JOE can be like these two presidents, the better off he'll be!! He's got some senators up there that will back him.

If he doesn't then, "You're completely right, the republicans, trump supporters, McConnell, their allies, the billionaires, etc. will be right back tearing the door down in 2022/2024.

Exactly!

The whole thing smacks of lip service. They were never going to raise that minimum wage. They needed an out, so they used the parliamentarian so that they could have a bad guy to blame thinking that nobody would be the wiser.

Was this the 'person' (the parliamentarian) who ruled the bill couldn't have some sort of amendment attached?

There was a small bit about it in the news one night.

Yes.

The parliamentarian is "an advisor" and nothing more. They are not elected. You don't even have to listen to them. Clearly, they (both Democrats and Republicans) used her as an out to get rid of the 15 dollar minimum wage that none of them ever wanted to begin with.

Only lame-ass Schumer would let that happen. Mitch McConnell actually told her not to bother coming in to work because nothing she would ever say would be listened to.

It is truly pathetic how Schumer let that go. It's probably going to cost democrats both houses of congress in 2022 and Republicans will be back in charge.

Correct. They were able to categorize it as a budget adjustment so they only need 51 votes. It's the same way McConnell got Trump's huge tax cuts for the rich passed.

It's the same way Biden will once again jack the taxes right back up on the rich. Maybe.

Humour me.

Would a new budget instead of an 'adjustment' require more then 51 votes? I always thought 51 votes passed anything except constitutionally changing legislation?

What am I missing here?

That's close.

A supermajority (2/3rds votes) is required to pass anything that changes a previous legislation attached to the constitution. A budget does not. Treaties also require a supermajority.

A bill can be passed with a simple majority. No problem.

But if that bill is vetoed it then requires a supermajority vote to overrule the president. Last time that happened? Just a few months ago when Trump vetoed the defense spending bill. The Senate voted unanimously to overrule him.

This goes back to the Covid Relief Plan. There is a LOT in there that effects already written legislation, therefore it SHOULD take a supermajority to overturn it and change it.

That's why they changed it to a "budget adjustment". That way, they're not overturning a piece of legislation, they're simply amending it. That can be done with a simple majority.

It's actually Mitch McConnell that wrote the book on doing things that way. Democrats are simply using his own rules against him now.
