First Indoor Grow

My brother uses some sort of foam blocks in his hydro stuff. I'm not familiar with the round rocks. What's that all about?

So the pellets are made of 'expanded' clay. Same stuff they make pottery from but it's had air added (like ice cream or air-crete) to 'expand' the clay. They are porous and wick water to a degree so they do hold the moisture like soil but the clay itself is inert so it cant rot like soil.

I assume the foam blocks are rock-wool?

Yeah that's it. Rock wool. The round pellets look cool. They sort of look like they'd be easier to deal with too. Are they pricey?

50 liters (1 litre ~ 1 quart) cost $50 Cad (about $40 US).

The place I bought it from calls it Hydroton. They need a good rinse when new and we've re-used ones before. Typically they need a bit of a wash after a run for salt/hard water deposit and old root removal. If they're really bad I recycle them into a window well for drainage or just the garden.
I have tried to use them for a slingshot but they're too light.

We've had everything from house plants, orchids, tomato plants, miniature peppers, green onions and succulents. The Thanksgiving and Christmas cactus's are going on eight to ten years and constantly bloom.

OH. That's pretty cool. I didn't notice the pellets at first. It looked like the plant was just sitting in a skinny container of water.
