You'd be amazed at how many people around here still drive without seatbelts. It's staggering.
I've worn mine since high school. We used to go out to where they were building Interstate 575 back in '84 and '85. It ended at Bells Ferry Road; that is they had it blocked off at that point and you had to exit, but there was another mile and a half of blacktop laid out on its way to Canton.
We would go out there, move some of the wooden block signs out of the way, mark off a quarter mile and drag race. The cops usually hung out with us and supervised and even took part.
One night while we're just talking, one Georgia State Patrol Officer was talking about the whole seat belt thing. New laws were in the works at the time and some guys were bitching, others thought it was a good idea, etc.
So I asked the Trooper point blank: Do they really do any good?
He looked at me about as seriously as anybody has ever looked at me and said, "Son, I can only tell you this: In my 15 years as a State Trooper, I have never unbuckled a dead body."
I've worn my seatbelt ever since.
