Dr. Wolff’s Socialist Thread Room.

It's an interesting question for two reasons. The first is just to see how many people confuse socialism with democracy. The second reason is although capitalism can be wasteful (do you really need 20 choices of HB pencil?) it does spur innovation and cost cutting to a degree.

You'd be amazed at how many people around here still drive without seatbelts. It's staggering.

I've worn mine since high school. We used to go out to where they were building Interstate 575 back in '84 and '85. It ended at Bells Ferry Road; that is they had it blocked off at that point and you had to exit, but there was another mile and a half of blacktop laid out on its way to Canton.

We would go out there, move some of the wooden block signs out of the way, mark off a quarter mile and drag race. The cops usually hung out with us and supervised and even took part.

One night while we're just talking, one Georgia State Patrol Officer was talking about the whole seat belt thing. New laws were in the works at the time and some guys were bitching, others thought it was a good idea, etc.

So I asked the Trooper point blank: Do they really do any good?

He looked at me about as seriously as anybody has ever looked at me and said, "Son, I can only tell you this: In my 15 years as a State Trooper, I have never unbuckled a dead body."

I've worn my seatbelt ever since.

Did they ever show "Highway of Agony" at your high school? Early safe driving film with real accident footage.
They did show the school bus accidents video. It was horrific. If they showed that today there would be a class action lawsuit against the school so fast it would make your head swim.

Never mind the fact they turn their kids loose on the internet with no limits.
