Chauvin found guilty of murder, manslaughter in George Floyd's death

I'm still willing to bet he doesn't get the full 40 years. I think the judge is just putting it in for the record, which is a good thing. It will make any appeal on the grounds of unfairness highly unlikely.

The idea is that the judge makes this ruling so he can up the sentence but then makes the decision not to. I'm betting he gets 20 years and is out in less than 10.

Former Minneapolis police Officer Derek Chauvin pleaded guilty Wednesday to a federal charge of violating George Floyd’s civil rights, admitting for the first time that he kept his knee on Floyd’s neck — even after he became unresponsive — resulting in the Black man’s death.

Chauvin, who is white, was convicted this spring of state murder and manslaughter charges in Floyd’s May 25, 2020, death, and was sentenced to 22 1/2 years.

In his federal plea Wednesday, Chauvin admitted he willfully deprived Floyd of his right to be free from unreasonable seizure, including unreasonable force by a police officer, by kneeling on Floyd’s neck even though he was handcuffed and not resisting. A second federal count in Floyd’s death was dismissed, but Chauvin pleaded guilty to another count in an unrelated 2017 case.

Chauvin is cutting a deal. He's trying to avoid life without the possibility of parole.

All of it is really just window dressing bullshit. Once he lost the state case, he knew this was coming. He planned accordingly.

Odds are though, he'll still serve a lot of time. I'm betting the deal is 10 years.

That sentencing range was laid out in the plea agreement filed months ago, which also mentioned Chauvin would be expected to serve between 17 and a little over 21 years, "assuming all good-time credit."
