Brace yourself, because I agree with them.
The whole "eviction protection" thing has been a complete farce for the most part. The Federal Law which Democrats and Biden allowed to lapse was problematic to begin with.
The New York law was flat out stupid on a level incomprehensible. Here we go:
Under the Federal Law, if you had lost your job or your income had dropped for any reason, you could apply for financial aide to pay your rent and you couldn't be evicted.
But the problem was that the tenant had to fill out that paperwork to apply for it, the landlord wasn't allowed to. You would think that people would jump all over that deal, but guess what: they didn't. Why? Because THEY didn't get the money, the landlord did.
So what you wound up with was landlords running around BEGGING their tenants to fill out the paperwork so that the rent would be paid but the vast majority of them wouldn't do it because, "well, screw the landlord. I'm not filling that crap out so he gets money and he can't evict me anyway so screw him! HA HA!"
As bad as that is, the New York law was even worse. Under the New York law, all you had to do was say you were having difficulty paying the rent and there was nothing any landlord could do about it. You didn't have to prove a thing, you didn't have to pay the rent, and landlords had absolutely NO recourse at all to ever collect any money.
That system is unconstitutional. Why? Because it allows you to be your own judge in your own trial.
The SCOTUS was absolutely right to strike that law down.
Simply put, the no eviction laws have been abused DRAMATICALLY. It has financially ruined a great many small sized companies. What's more, those who are complaining about being evicted are the very same people that refused to fill out any paperwork because "there was nothing in it for them" and so they're now thousands if not 10's of thousands of dollars in debt for rent and they have no possible way of paying it off.
The whole thing has been a mess since day one and nobody did anything to correct any of it. To this day, they still haven't. Landlords that haven't been paid rent in over a year are going broke if they're not broke already because they get no such protection from banks holding the mortgages on their properties.
It was all very poorly done across the board by everybody.
