Sensors monitoring the masses of uranium fuel buried in the basement rooms of the reactor have detected rising levels of neutrons, signalling that the fission process used to create nuclear energy is occurring in one of the inaccessible rooms within the plant.

Although the levels are rising slowly, scientists are working to figure out the cause of the activity, and what action needs to be taken to prevent the risk of further radiation leaking out from the plant.

I wonder if its because of that brand new dome they put on it. I mean maybe it is containing it more so the readings are higher making it look like its increasing when it really isn't.

That's actually an interesting question. I don't know enough to even guess at the answer.

I caveat my answer by saying I'm as unknowing as Gomez but for the helluv' it but I wonder if after all these years the piles of FCM (fuel containing material?) have burned closer together ?

Good point. I hadn't considered that.

I do know that the reactor that melted down wouldn't have that issue as it all burnt through the core, the containment area and everything else, so it was a blob of mixed material burning into oblivion a week after it happened. I don't see how that could really get any worse.

But that brings up another question: are we sure we're talking about the same reactor at that plant? It was in fact the same basic technology as Fukushima in Japan. The only real difference is that Japan had 6 inline reactors while Chernobyl had 4.
