Montana House Speaker, Matt Regier, Refuses to Recognize House Member

Fun fact: just because you push your button to speak does not mean you automatically get to speak.

There are rules.

Among those rules are that you don't turn the floor into a shouting contest, drama queen display or an insult contest, which is exactly what Zooey did.

During the debate on the amendments for that bill, she was allowed to speak and the only thing that came out of her mouth were diatribes. No points of order, no real debate, just sensationist shit that has no business on the floor. She was allowed to do this twice before they said that's enough and refused to hear more.

This is how it went down:

MISSOULA - A Montana House rules committee upheld a decision by the Montana Speaker of the House to not allow Representative Zooey Zephyr (D-Missoula) to talk on the House floor on Thursday.
The decision comes after comments Zephyr, a transgender woman, made earlier this week about Senate Bill 99, which restricts healthcare for transgender youth.
The House was debating amendments to the bill offered by Governor Greg Gianforte. While speaking Tuesday, Zephyr told lawmakers they should be ashamed if they pass the amendments.
Republican Majority Leader Sue Vinton of Billings stood up to say the body would not be shamed into voting a certain way. Zephyr then replied to the comments.
"Then the only thing I will say is that if you vote yes on this bill and yes on these amendments, I hope the next time there's an invocation, when you bow your heads in prayer, you see the blood on your hands," she said.
Speaker of the House Matt Regier (R-Kalispell) said he had concerns Zephyr would maintain decorum if he called on her, following her comments on Tuesday. So, on Thursday, he decided not to recognize her.

If you're going to Marjorie Taylor Green a state house floor debate, then expect to be shut up just like Marjorie Taylor Green was.

Republicans would be blowing their minds if you told them to figuratively 'shut up and sit down'. Punishments last a specific amount of time. We'll see if she gets to speak again, ever, and then we can tell if this is a 'punishment' or retribution.

It's done all the time. Like I said, it was in fact done to MTG just a couple days ago. LITERALLY. By her own party, no less.

It was one day over the same bill.

It is already over.

You really should stop just reading one side of the story on this shit.

One day eh?

It was the latest development in a three-day fight over Zephyr's remarks against lawmakers who support of a ban on gender-affirming care. Zephyr, who is transgender, hasn't been allowed to speak on the statehouse floor since Thursday because she told her Republican colleagues last week they would have "blood on their hands" if they banned gender-affirming medical care for transgender youth.

And once again you read one side of the story and fly off the handle.

She was told on Monday to apologize for breaking decorum last week and refused to do so, THAT is why she was silenced again. This is a separate incident.

She is nothing more than a Marjorie Taylor Green clone on the left that shouts out ridiculous bullshit and then plays the victim when she's told to follow the rules and then silenced when she refuses to do so. AGAIN.

A lawmaker in Montana was silenced by her Republican colleagues on Monday, after they demanded she apologize for saying there would be “blood on your hands” if they voted for a bill to ban gender-affirming care for minors.
And the ongoing, stupid, childlike interruptions are going to keep her silenced for the foreseeable future. This is what happens when you elect a drama queen looking for Twitter and Instagram followers rather than a serious person that understands how to make an argument and is there to get things done.

Just ask the 14th district in Georgia. They still haven't gotten a single thing out of MTG other than a bad reputation.

And now she's talked herself completely out of the house chamber.

Montana’s Republican-dominated House voted Wednesday to ban Rep. Zooey Zephyr, who had said GOP lawmakers would have “blood” on their hands for passing bills restricting transgender rights and rallied protesters Monday after Speaker Matt Regier blocked her from being recognized to speak, from the House chamber for the remainder of this year’s legislative session.

That is what happens when you send drama queens to do a job that requires brains and decorum. She can still vote on bills and the like, but she'll have to wait until next year's session to rejoin the chamber.

I'll bet 5 bucks she does the same thing again and gets the heave ho within a week of next years session.

And yet house republicans of that state have voiced much more outrageous things on the floor but wait for a supermajority to inflict their ideology.

Sorry this is pure abuse of a supermajority and you wont have me change my mind.

The only known attempt to censure lawmakers in the Montana Legislature was almost a half-century ago, according to Eve Byron with the Montana Historical Society.

In 1975, Democratic lawmakers sought to reprimand three Republicans who were accused of placing false and misleading election advertisements, according to news articles provided by Byron.

The censure motion failed after a House committee determined the ads were misleading but not out of line with advertisements placed by other lawmakers, according to an article that appeared in the Independent Record newspaper.

There are no further records of Montana legislators being expelled or censured, Byron said.

One reflection of such a shift is the newly influential Montana Freedom Caucus, which includes at least 21 of the Legislature’s 102 GOP lawmakers.

Its ideological leader is U.S. Rep Matt Rosendale, a hardline conservative who backed former President Donald Trump’s false statements about fraud in the 2020 election and was among a core group of Republicans who opposed electing U.S. Rep. Kevin McCarthy as speaker of the House.

Efforts to punish Zephyr originated in the caucus, whose members said Zephyr’s comments displayed a “hateful rhetoric” and called for a “commitment to civil discourse” — similar to criticisms leveled against Democrats who were expelled from the Tennessee statehouse for joining in gun control demonstrations. The caucus later issued a statement calling Monday’s protest and arrests an “insurrection” and accused Zephyr of encouraging it.

No property damage or threats to lawmakers have been reported. But Republicans from the statehouse to Montana’s congressional delegation have called the protesters violent and condemned their interruptions.

Couch it anyway you want to feel good about it, but It's a fucking abuse of power.

"“I hope the next time there’s an invocation, when you bow your heads in prayer, you see the blood on your hands,” she said."

That's all that was said. That's what they are throwing out a democratically elected individual.

I've heard your fucking president say "GRAB HER BY THE PUSSY"

And yet not one fucking peep from republican assholes, so no this is pure power abuse.

Once again, you have a very selective ability to read.

For the record, that sort of "shame" talk is not allowed on the floor. You're supposed to be putting forward motions for the bill, possible issues with the bill, requested changes to the bill, not acting like a 5 year old yelling shame, shame, shame.

This is what she said first: "If you are forcing a trans child to go through puberty when they are trans, that is tantamount to torture, and this body should be ashamed.”

That was strike one. She was warned at that point that insults / attacks like that are not allowed on the house floor. You argue the bill or you don't argue at all.

So then she doubled down right after the morning prayer that opens proceedings with that prayer remark, a direct insult to the entire body and its procedures.

THAT is when they put the hammer down and told her to effectively sit down and shut up.

After that is when she was offered the chance to apologize and let it go. She once again doubled down and started a scene. Then of course she calls people in to disrupt house proceedings the day after that.

There are many things she COULD have done:
  • Start some petitions and get some signatures to voice opposition to the bill.
  • Gather actual facts about trans youth mental health and present those for the record.
  • Offer amendments to the bill that would allow counseling and drug treatment rather than the blanket ban.
And much more.

But that takes effort. That takes work. And clearly, that's not what she's there for. She's there to make a scene, rock the boat, cause outrage and play the victim.

She is Marjorie Taylor Green, only on the left. Nothing more.

That you fell for it should tell you exactly how all those people fall for the bullshit on the right: selective reading, no context to the story, no due diligence to find out what actually happened.

Just read a headline, automatically side with it and go on the warpath. Print half the story, cause outrage, play the victim.

It's MAGA. It's exactly like it.

I've heard your fucking president say "GRAB HER BY THE PUSSY"
Talk about completely out in left field.

He said that to a guy, alone, on a bus, when he didn't know he was being secretly recorded. It sure as hell wasn't on the house floor, after being sworn in, in front of a hundred other representatives with rules of decorum in place.
