Liedi and her wife Viola are reportedly one of the first three lesbian couples to have their children’s birth certificates changed after the country’s right-wing government announced in March that state agencies should no longer register the children of same-sex couples.

The couple doesn’t know why they were targeted as one of the first to have their legal status changed retroactively, as in most cities the policy has been focused on new babies born.

I know there's Republicans in the back halls of America gleefully rubbing their hands in anticipation.

Italy has a law that you can not be listed as a parent if you are not the biological parent. I have no idea why it's that way, but there it is and it's been that way for a long time.

In fact, the United States is the same way. On my birth certificate to this day, my father is listed on it, not my dad.

Even people who adopt kids aren't listed as "birth parents" on the child's birth certificate, they're listed as guardians. The gay and lesbian community are no different. I'm not sure how they could have had their names as parents on the certificate to begin with if they're not the birth parents.

I'm not making a lot of sense out of that article.

Well, it makes the one who gave birth the birth parent, not the other one who had nothing to do with it.

The reason for that is simple: genealogy. You can't keep it straight and health history straight for future reference if just anybody can be called a "birth parent". I've never seen a nation that doesn't differentiate between the two until now. Apparently, Canada does it.

Here, the woman who gave birth would be listed as the birth parent, the father would be listed as "unknown" if it was an anonymous donor or his actual name if known. The other woman would be listed as legal parent or guardian depending on the jurisdiction.

That way, in future, if that kid has to know its families medical history, they'll actually know it rather than them just say, "Sorry. We have no idea because we had to put that lady's name on it who isn't remotely related to you by blood."

My birth certificate lists my adopted parents.
Here, that would be a revised birth certificate, not an original.

The original always has your birth parents on it. Always. They can never be removed.

In some cases though, the original birth certificates are sealed by the court pending a medical emergency. That is done by adoption agencies a lot of the time.
