A disruptive passenger on a Friday flight from Paris, France, to Detroit, Michigan, is facing criminal charges after his behavior caused the plane to be diverted to Canada, police said.
I guess they figured if he's tough enough to be intentionally headed to Detroit, best to hand him off to Canada and let them deal with him.

Yes, I know why the flight was deverted to Canada, I just thought it was funny.

Depending on the severity of the passenger, landing at the first available airport is seen as the prudent move. Typically cross-Atlantic flights follow a set of air-highways (that change daily depending on weather fronts, active storms, season, etc). It's why sometimes you see several aircraft pass overhead, over a day, and then disappear for a few days only to return. Gander, Nfld used to always be that place since it was closest to Europe.
I note in this case it's Stephenville Nfld which is actually on the western side of Nfld. Looking at a world map it looks like it would be right along the great circle route from France to Michigan. If he'd been flying directly to somewhere a little farther south in the US it may have been American landfall first.
