As if we don’t already have enough on our plate in this country, President Trump has decided that his best chance of getting reelected is to sabotage the United States Postal Service.

Trump has once again, without any evidence at all, been criticizing mail in voting as being the easiest way to cheat on earth. He states over and over again without any evidence that voter fraud in mail in voting is rampant and should be banned.

(All of this while he and his family and most of his hangers on vote by mail every year.)

But now Trump has gone from simply making completely unfounded statements to actually trying to hamstring the USPS completely.

Just a week ago some people started ringing the alarm bells about dozens of sorting machines being removed from mail centers across the country. This from CNN:
Documents obtained by CNN indicate 671 machines used to organize letters or other pieces of mail are slated for “reduction” in dozens of cities this year. The agency started removing machines in June, according to postal workers.

We all know the USPS has been struggling for funding for years. That of course is due to a ridiculous bill passed by George W. Bush that requires USPS to pre-fund retiree health benefits for postal retirees accounts.

That puts USPS in the hole before it even begins to deliver the first piece of mail. And of course as those retirees get older and sicker and the costs of health care spirals out of control, USPS has no chance of breaking even, let alone making money.

But rather than revisit all of that and maybe increase funding like USPS has been asking for years, Trump decides to gut the entire system by removing sorting machines.

Makes sense, right?

Of course it doesn’t.

It’s actually why USPS has been falling farther and farther behind on deliveries. If Trump has his way, USPS will be back to primarily hand sorting the mail like they did circa 1920. Instead of a couple days to deliver a piece of mail it could take weeks.

That brings us right back to mail in voting. If USPS can’t deliver the ballots in a timely manner, it gives Trump the angle of calling the election bogus. He will then, of course, use that angle to hold on to power as long as he can.

To make matters even worse, people have also seen mail boxes being taken up at alarming rates. At first it was claimed that they were “removing and replacing” but the USPS own documentation calls it a “reduction”.

All of that has of course gotten the Inspector General involved and that office is now looking into all of DeJoy’s actions as the Postmaster General.
Of note is that DeJoy owns his own fulfillment service, is a contractor for Amazon and benefits greatly if USPS can’t perform its duties. In that scenario DeJoy stands to make a great deal more money.

And as if that weren’t enough, Trump has flat out refused to send USPS any funds to help it out, constantly claiming that it’s a failed, mismanaged enterprise that should simply die.

I think it was a year and a half ago that Bill Maher came up with the idea that if Trump lost the election or reached the end of his second term, he would not leave.

Well, people, he is as we speak laying the ground work for exactly that.
