There's something in the air in Virginia Thursday morning. Did things feel different when you woke Thursday? Turns out, it's the new NORML (pun intended); recreational marijuana use is now legal for adults in Virginia.

The Commonwealth becomes the first Southern state to legalize weed for recreational use, effective at 12 a.m. Thursday, July 1, 2021.

But, what does that mean for you?

Turns out, it doesn't give you a free pass to smoke pot. Based on the law, you can grow it, gift it in private -- ie. you and a friend can share amongst yourselves -- or have an ounce or less in your possession -- if you’re over 21. However, selling, buying, or driving with it will be illegal.

Essentially out of reach of the driver or occupants.

  • Within Canada, you are allowed to transport cannabis in a vehicle, but it must be secured in closed packaging and not within reach of the driver or occupants.

When you buy cannabis it comes in a sealed container/bag with a tax stamp. On sale that is put into a brown paper bag which is folded and sealed. I typically put it in the trunk. When I've seen people with trucks I've seen one of three things - if alone the glove compartment or behind the passenger seat otherwise the back box.

When I go out with some homegrown or previously opened I'll drop it in the trunk.

If it was sealed what difference does it make? Do you have to put your liquor or beer in the trunk on the way home?
