I don't know what I've done. I've been putting in edging stones and pea gravel around our exposed foundation at the rear of the house the last two days.

I haven't hit it, kicked anything, nothing of the sort, but I woke up yesterday feeling like I had. This morning it hurt even worse but I went ahead and finished off the yard project.

Just finished getting cleaned up and I swear I can barely walk. The pain is so excruciating I can't feel my back at all.

It's barely swollen at all. It's not discolored in any way. I'm clueless as to what I've done.

And of course it's the weekend, so there's no medical care other than the emergency room which will charge me a thousand dollars and send me home telling me to call my doctor on Monday.

🙄

Gout.

I had heard of it but had no idea what it was. My wife called my doctor at home and he sent me to his office where a nurse practitioner looked at it.

She knew instantly what it was.

A shot of steroids and a special medication for it and I'm already much better this morning.

I tell you, I wouldn't wish that sort of pain on my worst enemy.

I actually thought the same as you. We call it turf toe down here. I had it once in college but I didn't remember it hurting anywhere near as bad.

One more note:

She had said that cured meats and hard cheeses are triggers for it as is a tight in the toe shoe.

Well, my favorite sandwich I eat several times a week is salami with pepper jack cheese and lettuce with Dijon mustard and mayonnaise. Out the door that goes.

I also never found a decent pair of work boots. I had that one pair for 20 years and couldn't find anything close to it so I settled for a pair of Sketchers hiking boots. They're a little snug in the toe; not something I would have thought would be an issue, but out the door they go as well.
