It's news like this that scares the hell out of me.

I know.
We just had a local 60 year old go out Sat morning for a walk and not return. He was found dead late yesterday (non-suspicious manner the police report).

Too close for comfort man.

My dad told me not long before he died the same thing. That he didn't know how much time he had left. But he also said he didn't really care. He'd done pretty much everything he wanted to do. He had a good wife, good kids and a good life and he'd just keep going till he went. And that's exactly what he did. I hope I can go out just like he did, happy with the way everything worked out.

My great grandfather on my mothers side lived to 112. (Nobody knows for sure how old he was)

I remember him telling me that the greatest mistake the U.S. ever made was making California a state. I also remember him telling me that when he was a kid there wasn't a state west of the Mississippi river.

To the best of our knowledge, he was born in 1864, not long before the end of the Civil War.

He died in 1976 when I was 9 years old.

Not to go all religious on you guys but Jesus said it best a long damn time ago when he said " don't worry about tomorrow. The worries of today are enough".

I remember once only about 5 or 7 years ago talking to my sons about WWII and they were shocked to learn there was still war damage (in Europe and England) when I was younger. I had to point out it was only 15 years before I was born WWII ended.

The rebuilding of Berlin wasn't completed until 1986. They've also kept a running school of WWII and WWI bomb techs because pretty much every time new construction is done they wind up finding unexploded ordinance.

I don't think I'd mind getting old but I just hope I don't lose my fucking mind. About the only thing I'm scared of is dementia or alzheimers. Long as I keep my mind I'm good with whatever else comes along.

For me its losing a limb. If I go nuts I'm not going to know any better. But I don't think I could take losing an arm or leg.

We've got three guys I know of missing limbs. Two of them are missing a leg and one missing an arm. All three of them are sharp as a fucking tack. One of them is a department head. He's missing his left leg from the knee down. (Bad car wreck years ago.) Fucker is sharp as they come man. You can live a good life sans a limb. Without your mind you're just taking up space and fucking up somebody else's life.
