When I was a kid, the Fernbank Science Center in Atlanta was a rather small but nifty museum that had a few displays and that was about it. Today, not much has changed. It's gotten bigger and has a small theater and better displays, but it is not what one could call a world class museum.

That said, I was rather surprised when I just saw an ad on the site for Fernbank. I haven't been there since taking my daughter when she was young, so I clicked on it to see what was new.

Well, one thing is certain: Ticket prices and how they're applied are...well...judge for yourself:

It's free to walk in to the open area at the front where the gift shop is, that's about it. All the major exhibits require payment.

For me, it's the "ADULTS" starting at age 13 that really pisses me off. It used to be that school age children were free. Now a junior high student pays full adult price. It's fucking disgraceful.

Ah. I did go have a look at the Ontario Science Centre (used to go as a kid and with school trips also). It's currently charging 22/16/13 and the 16 is youth/student/senior.

I see what you mean though about the teens - that's a grab but not unexpected (?) as there were articles about them talking about closing before since its run by a school district (cost issues) but the public cried and so they relented on the closure.

And people wonder why we're the dumbest nation on earth. Seriously. This is where a lot of our government spending should be going instead of fucking defense contractors.
