6-3 Supreme Court on the California Strawberry Unions.

Well, it's like the Teamsters.

Say what you want about union officials skimming some money here or there. Before they came along, trucking was one of the most dangerous jobs in America. Companies didn't care about them at all. They'd over load the trucks to the point they were death traps and then give the truckers ultimatums like "if this load isn't in Chicago by noon tomorrow you don't get paid and your fired".

It led to guys driving way too long, way too fast, on overloaded trucks. A lot of people died. And that's before you even get to getting highjacked or robbed.

The Teamsters changed all of that for the better.

But guess what?

Now trucking wrecks are on the rise. Lawyers are advertising specifically "have you been injured in a trucking accident". Why? Because trucking companies trying to dodge union workers went with independent contractors. These independent contractors don't have the higher union pay and safety standards that union workers do.

So the independent trucker is right back where truckers started in the 40's and 50's: running overloaded trucks way to far for way too long way too fast. Most resort to drugs to stay awake and falsify their manifests to try to outsmart law enforcement.

It's gotten so bad the law is having to write and enforce the same exact rules that the Teamsters used to enforce from the outset.

And it still doesn't matter. To make money, independent truckers have to cut all the corners they can.

It's a situation that is far past out of control and getting worse every single day. All because companies aren't happy making 10's of millions of dollars while paying people a decent wage and keeping not only them but the public at large safe.

If they can squeeze an extra million dollars out each year by cutting corners at the expense of the public at large, then by God that's exactly what they'll do.

If we had decent labor laws like a civilized nation rather than the bullsit at will banana republic laws we wouldn't need unions to begin with.

The rich run the government so they make laws that favor the rich. Always been that way and probably always will be.
