I don't know much about the NHL, but wasn't it originally Canadian and based in Canada?

The original 6 were Toronto, Montreal, Boston, New York, Chicago and Detroit. The NHL started in 1917 after the demise of the National Hockey Association (created 1909). it should be noted that there were teams before that as far back as the 1800's.
In 67-68 the first expansion with 6 more teams occurred making the east and west divisions.

I saw my first live game in 1966 with my Dad at Maple Leaf Gardens; Detroit vs Toronto.
