I tell you, it just amazes me the stupidity you see on display each day.
When our subdivision was first built, they planted a bunch of trees in places they really shouldn't have: In between the sidewalks and yards and on the street corners. It wouldn't have been such a mistake though if they hadn't been mostly maples and oaks.
Maples and oaks get big. REALLY big. They have big roots. You planted them with the sidewalk only two feet away on one side and the street only two feet away on the other side. You knew (or should have known) how that was going to end.
And sure enough, it has ended that way. The large roots have gone up under the sidewalks and parts of the street buckling them.
So crews came in yesterday to start doing "the repairs". Did they take the trees down?
No. Of course not.
They simply cut the large roots off of either side of the tree, ripped up the concrete and asphalt and repoured and repaved.
This of course means that those trees have no real support on either side. What's more, they're going to start dying and will be effectively dead in a couple to few years.
All we'll need then is one of our patented thunderstorms we get each year with 30 to 40 mph wind gusts. Those by then mostly dead trees with no strong root system to support them anymore will fall like a house of cards into every single house anywhere near them and tomahawk chop them into oblivion.
The lawsuits will be swift. They will be expensive. They will be exhaustive. Especially if someone winds up dead.
