I'm starting a new experiment. I'm joining so-called 'right wing' social media to "see how the other half lives". So I just joined Gab Social. According to what I've read, it's chock full-O Nazis and is an echo chamber of white nationalist propaganda.
I just joined this morning, followed a couple of suggested groups, made the 'introduction post' and here is what I saw:
Within a couple minutes I received a few likes to my first post.
Looking around the timeline, I saw a bunch of regular, plain posts such as this poor man referred to the hospital for surgery:
Then this person that knitted a really cool 'Northern Lights' blanket:
Then this fellow talking about Mount St. Helens:
It all seems perfectly normal. Granted, I did see a few political posts. Most were poking fun at Biden's state of the union speech last night and the typical political posts. There's also a LOT of religious posts on the site; things such as 'join us in prayer' and 'you can find Jesus anywhere'. Nothing out of the ordinary, really.
And just as I thought everything was perfectly normal and I was wondering why Gab has the reputation it has, I get a notification of a private message. Keep in mind that at this point I had been on Gab for all of about 30 minutes:
